Environmental Monitoring
In October 2009, PTTEP AA reached agreement with the Australian Government to develop a comprehensive monitoring program to address any long term environmental impacts of the spill. The program is jointly managed by the company and the Department for Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities (DSEWPaC).
The findings of all scientific studies are peer reviewed by an independent DSEWPaC panel before being issued. All study results are transparent and made publicly available through the DSEWPaC website.
PTTEP AA agreed with the Federal Government to fund the independent studies for at least two years. However, some studies may continue for five, seven or even 10 years. This is not because of any obvious damage to the marine environment but to ensure the best science in order to address any long term impacts should they be detected - now or into the future.
